Written by: Ellie Wilson, MS, RDN Black Horse Farm Coxsackie, NY Farmers – Lloyd Zimmerman and Family LloydZBlackhorseLloyd Zimmerman did not grow up farming – he was a NYC kid, child of two college professors, but he became interested in agriculture because his family had a summer home in the country. At 21, he graduated with a degree in agricultural economics, and purchased an old farm in Coeyman’s Hollow with the help of his parents. He farmed part-time, while working for New York State, eventually working in the Governor’s office on agriculture and civil defense. In 1964, the farm started making money and he “retired” from state service. He and his wife raised lamb, initially, and one of his first customers was Central Markets. After Vietnam, market pressures moved him into vegetables, and he hasn’t looked back. His favorite part of farming is watching crops grow, and working with the broad group of people in the produce business. While he did not grow up farming, his children did, and two daughters, Chellie Apa and Lisa Buhrmaster, now run major aspects of the operation. They employ on average about 55 people – this is a diverse and dynamic business. At this time of year, his day starts at 4:30 AM, but has started as early as 2:30, which some of their team starts still because they are packing trucks. That work is essential to bringing in those fresh items – time between field and fork is important. Lloyd chooses his seeds based on science and savvy – sweet corn and tomatoes should have a good, sweet taste, so they start there, and then look at some of the scientific specifications of a product, like the measurement of sweetness, called degrees Brix. They work with the seed salesman to locate varieties of new items that have a good reputation and production. There are very strict standards and procedures in place around harvest and packing – cleanliness is king, and Black Horse Farm is GAP certified. GAP stands for Good BlackhorsecabbageAgricultural Practices, and it is a system of practices and record keeping that helps farmers ensure food safety is being managed. Price Chopper only works with farms that are GAP certified, as part of our commitment to ensuring our customers can be confident that they really are getting the best quality fruits and vegetables from us. Attention to refrigeration, hand washing and other aspects of safe food production are part and parcel of their work. They also sort their produce with those less fortunate in mind, and work with local food pantries to supply good food that is not premium grade. There are some game changers on the horizon – Lloyd sees two that he thinks will impact farming in enormous ways. The first is the use of drones – he has been wishing for these for over 20 years, and is excited that they are coming to farming. The other is the advanced education farmers are starting to benefit from, as children return to their family farms with degrees in agronomy, veterinary science and business. I really enjoyed speaking with Lloyd – his gravelly voice ebbed and flowed as we spoke, full of passion and humor and knowledge. With helping people eat more fruits and vegetables so central to my role, I asked what he thought would help people do a better job, and he thought helping people understand what local produce is and who the farmers are is a great start. We completely bonded over favorites – tomatoes, on a delicious BLT sandwich with a malted milk (I make mine with the Price Chopper pre-cooked bacon – slices are nice and thin, great for sandwiches).  So, please take my advice – take advantage of the season and enjoy the bounty Price Chopper brings you from farmers like Lloyd Zimmerman – sweet summer! Written By: Ellie Wilson, MS, RDN Senior Nutritionist Christa, Ellie, and the Richardson Family One of the great aspects of my job here at Price Chopper is being able to participate in the growing efforts of food companies reaching out to dietitians so they can share information about their mission, quality and health of their products.  As we all become more interested in nutrition and food origins (yay!), helping to bring their stories to our shoppers is a great opportunity to share love of food and health. So, in late May, with community dietitian Christa Valentine, I drove up to meet with a group of supermarket dietitians from the Northeast, and our gracious hostess, Sara Wing, RD, Director of Health and Community Programs for Cabot. Cabot 1919(2)We began with a tour of the Cabot Creamery in Cabot, VT.  This is the original site of the cooperative that was started there in 1919 by 94 farmers.  They produced more milk than they could handle and wanted to make butter and ship it south to more urban areas.  The cost to join? Five dollars per cow, and a cord of wood to fuel the boiler. In 1930, they started to make cheese. Our group got the “insider” tour of the original building, the Cabot town creamery, built in 1893 and modernized over the years.  It is so sustainable that after they make the cheese and process the whey, they can actually rescue the water and purify it, then clean the pipes in the plant.  Talk about being really green in Vermont! With their holistic attention to detail and process, they create wonderful varieties of cheese. As a dietitian, I really like the light cheeses, some of the very few in the market that bring together lower fat with melt-ability, (is that a real word?), which helps ensure people who are managing a health concern that requires attention to fat content, have viable, tasty and enjoyable choices.  Cheese is gluten free naturally, and harder cheeses are naturally lactose free as well. We then had a cheese grading class with their cheese grader, native VT born and dairy-farm raised Craig Gile, and I fell into deep like with a variety I had not had before, Alpine Cheddar from their Farmers Legacy line.  Swiss-Parmesan-cheddar-delicious-versatile-and hide in my purse-able. (I didn’t hide it really, I asked before I adopted the bar we passed around to review the packaging. Really.) We then wound our way through the Vermont hills to the Richardson Family Farm in Woodstock, VT.  This fourth generation family farm was named Vermont Dairy jersey girlsFarm of the Year for producing high quality milk from their beautiful, doe-eyed Jersey cows.  Jersey cows produce milk with a very high butterfat content.  They graciously shared their farm with us, as well as coffee and a lovely apple crisp, and answered our questions about how they care for their “girls”.  Children are part of the family team, too!  Best of all, they are staunch Price Chopper shoppers, sharing back with me how much they like their local store (shout out to #123 Barre, VT!), which brings me full circle. This was a really relevant experience and helped me increase my knowledge about the quality and range of dairy items Cabot produces (cheese, butter, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, whey, and more.)  I hope you explore their great products, found in our dairy and specialty cheese cases at your local Price Chopper. Tell us your favorite flavor of Cabot cheese for the chance to win a Cabot Farmers Legacy Cheddar gift pack!  Leave your comment below to be entered and we’ll select one winner on Monday, June 30th! By now, you should be enjoying some of the fruits of your labors, or annuals of your labors! Color is abounding in your garden, and on a warm day with a nice breeze, your yard or home has the fragrant scent of Spring in it. Now is the time that many people are ready to do their summer planting. June is the time of year where the past meets the present along with a glimpse of the future. How so? Many of your flowers are just finishing up their bloom, while others are fully strutting their glory, and then again, some are just ready to burst with a rainbow of colors! One hint that you may not have tried is to include a bed of succulents. They add a sturdy and hardy base of color and are beautiful to look at as well. If you need some other suggestions to enhance the color spectrum of your garden, consider some Coreopsis, Marigolds, Periwinkle, Hollyhock, Sunflowers or Shasta Daisies. Also, try to do your watering at cooler times of the day after dusk to prevent quick evaporation. It’s not only the wise thing to do, but will help with your water bill as well. Don’t forget to pay attention to your lawn too. I’ve heard tell that so much attention is being paid to the garden, that sometimes, the beauty of green grass is lost in the mix. Remember that gardening is a wonderful family tradition for many. If you have children, consider including them in this seasons planting. Remember to take pictures of your garden for Facebook and show it off to your friends. Either way, have fun. Happy Gardening!
