Our February home.grown. Brewer of the Month: Brooklyn Brewery

We love all things local, and one of our favorite sectors of local food is local beer. There are so many different brews, flavors, and styles, and so many stories to tell! That’s why we’ve embarked on an exciting home.grown. adventure: to bring you fresh craft beer stories each month from our Northeast region. Our region is home to some of the best craft breweries in the world, and we’re telling their stories to our craft beer fanatics here on our blog.

Up next: Brooklyn Brewery!

When good beer is hard to find, sometimes you have to make it yourself. That’s exactly the story of Brooklyn Brewery. In 1988, Steve Hindy took his homebrewing knowledge from his days as a foreign war correspondent and started the business with his friend Tom Potter. Together they hand-delivered the first batches of Brooklyn Lager to a handful of local bars.

Today Brooklyn’s beers now travel to more than half the U.S. and over 30 countries. Brewmaster Garrett Oliver, a James Beard Award winner, and his team brew everything from classic styles to bold experiments, collaborating with their peers across the globe to keep pushing the boundaries of beer.

Case of Brooklyn Lager

Brooklyn believes that great beer should be delicious, unpretentious, and support the community where it is enjoyed. This belief is engraved within the combination of flavors in its Brooklyn Lager. Toffee, toast, and caramel all unite with a dry-hopped aroma of grapefruit, flowers, and pine to represent the hometown.

Whether it’s at home or on the road good beer is always present at the best celebrations. That’s exactly where Brooklyn’s quirky Rosé de Ville shines. This sour ale harnesses perky raspberries and a tart edge, leading to a satisfying balance of sweet fruit and clean acidity. It’s bright, bubbly finish, and brilliant pink hue leaves your worries behind and lets the good times take over.

Up next: Paradox Brewery!

This month we’re back for another round at Paradox Brewery. Last February we introduced some of our favorite Paradox brews here on our blog, this month we return to talk about their awesome new facility!

Paul and Joan Mrocka opened Paradox Brewery six years ago, now after years of hard work they have a new brewery in North Hudson, just a few miles north of the old Schroon Lake location. The new location will allow Paradox to quadruple its output, and move everything on site. Inside, the brewery will be full of modern, highly efficient equipment, while a wraparound deck on the outside will provide guests with a gorgeous view of the mountains. Paradox even has a plan for food trucks to be a part of the atmosphere in the future. Yum!

Stop in to the new Paradox location, where you can enjoy the same quality brews in a new and improved environment. Paradox Pilsner is still a Paradox fan favorite as a light, crisp and refreshing drink. While, Beaver Bite IPA remains a top seller, alongside its juicy, double IPA sibling Beaver Overbite.

Here’s to another year of tasty craft beer!

Our December home.grown. Brewer of the Month: Brown’s Brewing Company

Up next: Brown’s Brewing Company!

This month we return to Brown’s Brewing Company. We stopped here on our epic craft brewery tour back in March and are revisiting to chat about some more tasty brews.

For many craft beer fans, dark beers such as Stouts, Porters, and Ambers are what draw a lot of passion and dedication. Dark beers have complexities that unfold across the palate, leaving an enticing flavor.  Brown’s Oatmeal Stout does this very well, and has been a flagship in the Brown’s taproom for nearly two decades because of its easy-drinking, full-bodied flavors. Oatmeal Stout is an engaging, dark, and bold ode to the classic English Stout. The brew earned Brown’s the prestigious gold medal at the World Beer Cup; but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to refine it into an approachable, easy-to-drink, rich, and silky smooth glass of deliciousness. For the ultimate experience, check out the Oatmeal Stout Spotify playlist.

Cherry Razz was born in Brown’s Troy Taproom in the mid 1990’s. It has gone through many iterations, but has always resonated with folks who are drawn to bold flavor. Tart and sassy just like its name, this Amber Ale features a generous amount of whole crushed cherries and raspberries balancing a sweet malt forward character and a slight hop zest. For a fervently dedicated fan base, this beer is an elegant tradition for many nights out. Easy to fall in love with, Cherry Razz is even easier to drink. Don’t forget to check out the Cherry Razz Spotify playlist.

Up next: Sloop Brewing Company!

Named after the boats that once moved people up and down the Hudson, Sloop Brewing Company came into fruition in 2011. Founded by Adam Watson and Justin Taylor in pursuit of new tastes and adventures, the duo got their start by selling beer at farmers markets across New York’s Hudson Valley. In 2014, they opened their first production facility in a Dutch post & beam barn in Elizaville, NY. Recently, Sloop followed up by opening a brand new 25,000 square foot facility in East Fishkill’s former IBM plant.

Sloop’s star player is their juicy, hazy, flagship Juice Bomb IPA. In this explosive brew, late hopping and low bitterness combine to bring about citrusy, juicy notes of American hops. An exciting blast of tropical leads the way, and a resin-y, more balanced flavor calms the drink down at the end. Juice Bomb is a must try for real hop lovers!

Our October home.grown. Brewer of the Month: Artisanal Brew Works!

We love all things local, and one of our favorite sectors of local food is local beer. There are so many different brews, flavors, and styles, and so many stories to tell! That’s why we’re embarking on a new home.grown. adventure: to bring you fresh craft beer stories each month from our Northeast region; the best region in the United States if you ask us!

Up next: Artisanal Brew Works!

Owned by two high school teachers, Artisanal Brew Works is a microbrewery located in Saratoga Springs, NY. Kurt Borchardt and Colin Quinn spend their days educating both the youth in the classroom, and craft beer fans in the brewery. Artisanal Brew Works products are a lesson in variety. They make it their mission to appeal to a plethora of tastes with their expansive list of local, handcrafted beers.

One of the favorites of these handcrafted beers is a hazy, New-England style IPA known as Daily Double. Beginning with a citrusy and fruity aroma, and finishing with hop bitterness, Daily Double is a flavorful experience you’ll have to try for yourself. Luckily, it’s one of the brews currently on tap.

Another staple beverage from Artisanal Brew Works is White in the Glasses. Cloudy due to the high amount of wheat used, White in the Glasses is a tasty Belgian Wit. Spiced with a touch coriander and orange peel, it’s a prime example of a light, yet perfectly flavored craft brew.

Our September home.grown. Brewer of the Month: Magic Hat Brewing Company!

Up next: Magic Hat Brewing Company!

Stirring up some mysterious concoctions in the heart of South Burlington, Vermont, Magic Hat is a well-known local brewer. They refer to their brews as elixirs, and their most popular potion is #9. It’s not quite a pale ale, but it runs across your tongue with notes of fruit and floral hop bitterness, bringing an unusual and curious palate. As they say at Magic Hat, #9 asks more questions than it answers. You’ll just have to see for yourself.

Another mischievous feature in the Magic Hat lineup is Circus Boy. A unique and refreshing American-style Hefeweizen. Due to his nocturnal behavior, only appearing under the darkness of a cloudy night sky, Circus Boy is something of an anomaly. Curious for more? Perhaps a closer encounter with this suspicious brew is necessary.

If you’re not sure which Magic Hat brew to choose you can always go with a variety pack, like the special edition IPA Playlist Variety Pak. A 12-beer variety featuring some of the companies best creations, led by TFG (Taken for Granite) Rock Solid IPA. TFG is a crisp IPA with a smooth malt backing, balanced with orange and grapefruit notes guaranteed to rock your taste buds.

Our August home.grown. Brewer of the Month: Northway Brewing Company!

That’s why we’re embarking on a new home.grown. adventure: to bring you fresh craft beer stories each month from our Northeast region; the best region in the United States if you ask us!

Up next: Northway Brewing Company!

In 2016, Northway Brewing Company bought an old movie theatre and turned it into a brewery. Launched in 2018, Northway was created to celebrate the people and the landscapes that inhabit the Adirondacks. Located right on the edge of Adirondack Park in Queensbury, NY, Northway’s facility features a 50-barrel brew system, 3.5-barrel pilot system, a bottling and canning line, and a 3,000 square-foot taproom.

Northway offers a number of core brands brewed to encapsulate the essence of a relaxing day in the Adirondacks. Of these core brands, Sunrise Session IPA is a favorite! Sunrise is an unfiltered session IPA dry hopped with Mosaic and Mandarina Bavaria hops, creating the perfect combination of hazy and juicy. Perfect Day Pilsner is another tasty brew that has met rave reviews; a classic, German-styled Pilsner, Perfect Day brings Bavarian malts, Saphir, and Tettnang Hops into a beautiful blend. A satisfyingly crisp and refreshingly clean brew that will prove to be the perfect beverage to complement your perfect day.

Our February home.grown. Brewer of the Month: Paradox Brewery!

Up next: Paradox Brewery!

This February, or should we say “Febrewary,” we’re highlighting Paradox Brewery. Located on Route 9 in Schroon Lake, Paradox is the home of Pure Adirondack Craft Beer. The brewery was founded in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains and they pride themselves on creating pure, authentic brews with all the tastes and feelings of the area.  If you ask the team over at Paradox, they’ll tell you their foundation is the water they use; it can only be found 600 feet below the Adirondack Park. Water so pure it needs no filtering or treatment before being brewed!

The beginnings of Paradox date back 30 years to when President and Founder Paul Mrocka fell in love with brewing while stationed in Germany as an Army Pilot. Mrocka began brewing for family and friends around Paradox Lake, and those lucky enough to know where to go on the lake could go share a beer with him. Mrocka became fairly well-known for his beer and in 2013 eventually received enough encouragement to open the brewery in Schroon Lake.

When following the Paradox Brewery Beer Trail you will find a wide variety of unique, and tasty Adirondack Beers. Check out their core beer selection including Paradox Pilsner, a crisp and highly-drinkable cross between a Czech and German style lager. Also, definitely don’t forget their Off Trail Series, where Paradox enjoys trying new ingredients and different ideas. Off Trail brews include American Wheat, a beer full of wheat, with esters from their house yeast blend, white wine, and a hint of lemon character. American Wheat brings lots of hop flavors and aromatics. Paradox also offers a menu full of seasonal brews and bottle releases.
