Earlier this year, the U.S. Mint made its very last penny. As you can imagine, it caused a shortage of pennies at checkouts across the country. At Market 32 and Price Chopper, our goal is to make the transition to a world without pennies as smooth as possible!
For starters, If you pay with a card, EBT, gift card, or exact change, it’s business as usual.
But, starting [Date TBD], if you pay with cash and you don’t have the exact change, your transaction will be rounded to the nearest nickel. Not to worry! Rounding changes totals by no more than 2 cents and typically balances out over time.
Things you need to know!
•Pennies will no longer be issued as change, although we will happily accept any pennies you bring in.
•When you’re not paying with exact change, totals will be rounded up or down to the nearest nickel.
•This approach follows the proposed Common Cents Act, which aims to create a consistent national rounding standard as pennies are phased out.
•You can avoid rounding by paying with a card,
EBT, gift card, or exact change.
•Sales tax is calculated normally – only the
change amount is adjusted.
•Receipts will clearly show the original total and
any rounding applied.
Thank you for your understanding as we roll out the change!
