It is mango season! As a culinary dietitian, I must share – mangoes are one of my favorite fruits. Full of benefit, flavor, and fun, they are the whole package – delicious, nutritious and so versatile, they really bring a wonderful experience to everything you make.
Mangos are a drupe, which is a type of stone fruit – the botanical group includes peaches, nectarines and cherries, so it is in great company. If you have never tried one, you will find their flavor to be reminiscent of a peach, but a bit more intense. They are a nutrition powerhouse – just 3/4 cup of fresh mango is an excellent source of Vitamin C, offering 50% of daily needs, and a good source of folate and copper. There are several other nutrients, like fiber, Vitamin B6, Vitamin A and E – together they add up to a significant package of benefits that fuel energy and vitality, through support of healthy red blood cell production, aiding immunity and skin health, along with empowering digestive health – so you feel good and look good, inside and out! Research is also showing benefits for managing blood sugar and lowering blood pressure. These early study results are exciting – helping people enjoy their healthy lifestyle starts with loving the food you eat!
Mangos originated in India over 5000 years ago and traveled the world with early explorers. Gradually becoming a culinary staple, mangoes have inspired global culinary traditions and signature dishes we can make at home, such as Thai Green Mango Salad, or Mexican Mango Salsas, great to zip up your chip game or delight as a topping for grilled seafood and chicken. You can also be the star of the barbeque circuit with Mango Chili Mustard Sauce topping pulled pork sliders or succulent spare ribs. On warmer days, keep it cool with shredded or cubed mango in salads or pureed in smoothies – the list is endless! On busy days, don’t forget the fresh cut mango in the Produce cold case – ready for snacks or recipes. I love a cool Mango Mule (mocktail or cocktail) with peppery ginger beer and lime wedges, or some mango puree on top of vanilla ice cream with chopped pistachios. Think about traditional or family favorites that can use a fresh twist – like a Mango Shortcake, with cubed mango subbing for strawberries on a fresh Market 32 Bakery Buttermilk Biscuit, topped with PICS Whipped Cream! It is a fun riff for any summer party, and very likely to get you an Instagram shout out! Finally, here is some easy inspiration for sweet and savory fans – brush cool, pureed mango on grilled shrimp and sprinkle a pinch of cayenne or Tajin seasoning for a fabulous flavor-bomb finish.
You can find fresh mangos, including the extra sweet Honey Mango variety, in our stores in the Produce section, and with fresh cut mango in the Produce cold case – ready for snacks or recipes. Get some today and make some mango magic!
