Cherishing Cherries!
In our opinion, one of the more underrated fruits out there is the cherry. They are sweet, snackable, and perfect for the summer. They are great alone or an important ingredient in endless tasty recipes. That’s why this summer we plan on cherishing this awesome stone fruit.
To start, there are two different types of cherries: tart and sweet. Tart cherries are good for cooking and baking, while sweet cherries are the type you buy to eat as a snack. When purchasing these sweet snacks, look for the firm and plump ones that appear bright and glossy. Sweet cherries are mainly grown in California, Washington, and Oregon, while tart cherries can commonly be found in Michigan and Wisconsin. Some popular types of sweet cherries are Bing, Lambert, and Rainier. The most common type of tart cherry is the Montgomery, best when used in baking as they hold their shape better than their more snackable relatives.
At Price Chopper & Market 32, we love using cherries in our recipes. And not just the classic cherry pie. Check out some of these delectable recipes, perfect for the summer!
Brighten Up Your Summer with home.grown. Outdoor Floral
The beauty of summer is now surrounding us. From the full, bright green trees to colorful flowers planted on the lawns of our neighbors and local businesses, there is so much to smile about. If you are interested in adding some summer fun to your lawn, you have come to the right place. We have a few tips on how to make the outside of your home look fabulous, one plant at a time. While this will require some work and patience, you will be thrilled by the outcome.
- Do Some Research: What type of flowers or plants are you interested in having outside your home? Hanging plants? Flowers that must be physically planted? Having an idea of what you are looking for will help before you go shopping.
- Clear the Ground: If you chose hanging flowers, then water them and you are all set! However, if you bought potted plants, it is time to get started. Make sure all weeds and rocks are fully removed from the ground.
- Measure Where to Plant: It is important to set the plants down to get an idea of where you want your plants and how far apart they should be placed.
- Start Planting: Smooth soil with a rake before planting. Once completed, dig a hole the same length as the container the plant was in. Once the plant is in, fill with the soil you just dug out.
- Time to water: Water at the base of your plants and then add bark mulch. This will help retain the water moisture.
We’re proud to partner with local greenhouses to bring you quality, fresh floral. This summer, decorate your home with the best our region has to offer!

Watermelon Granita
by Jodie Fitz
3 cups diced watermelon
1 cup pitted fresh cherries
1 navel orange
2 tablespoons PICS honey
1 teaspoon PICS vanilla extract
Place the diced watermelon and pitted cherries in a blender.
Cut the navel orange in half and squeeze the juice from both halves into the blender. Add in the honey and vanilla extract. Blend all ingredients together until mixed well.
Pour the mixture into an 8 x 8 glass baking dish and freeze overnight.
Before serving, shave the iced mixture with a large serving fork, moving in different directions. Scoop and serve frozen.
Watermelon: You can save time and purchase pre-cut watermelon in the produce section of your local Price Chopper/Market 32.
Little hands: Young children can dice the watermelon using a plastic knife- a great way to help develop and strengthen motor skills, control and knife safety.
Pitting the Cherries: It’s simplest to pit cherries with a cherry pitter, but if you don’t have one, you can remove the stem and poke the pit through using a chopstick, toothpick, straw or even a thin pastry tip.
Leftovers: Store frozen fruit shavings in an airtight freezer container.
Alternative: Granita is a perfect, fruit-packed afternoon snack and great alternative to a traditional snow cone.
Cooking with Kids: Every recipe is filled with life skills that encourage a child’s confidence in the kitchen. Here are a few to focus on when making this recipe:
- Dicing and knife safety
- Pitting cherries
- Extracting juice
- Measuring ingredients
- Following directions
- Blending and blender safety

Goose Island Lost Palate Hazy IPA. Juicy. Hazy. Mango(y).
Lost Palate is dedicated to Jonny, a long time Goose Island employee. Jonny, and brewer Quinn, ideated this recipe after Jonny’s recent victorious battle with cancer. The recipe was inspired after Jonny lost the ability to taste many flavors, an unfortunate consequence of battling cancer. He almost completely lost his palate and mangos and cinnamon were two of the few things he was still able to taste. We’re happy to say that Jonny is now a cancer survivor! This beer pays tribute to the flavors that were never lost.
