We are very excited to be hosting our first annual “Breast and Ovarian Cancer Research Progress Report” at Proctor’s GE Theater in Schenectady, NY on November 2nd at 7pm.  This is a rare opportunity for the public to get an insider’s look into state-of-the-art research and treatment options.  All are invited to listen and learn about developments in preventing and curing women’s cancers directly from a renowned research team from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, whose studies are funded by The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  Dr. Dirk Iglehart is a specialist on the genes that cause breast cancer to originate and to spread, and he leads a team dedicated to developing effective treatments that can target these genes and stop them in their tracks.  Dr. Ursula Matulonis focuses on gynecologic malignancies and the genetic links between breast and ovarian cancers.  “The Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s ability to support the most promising research to resolve breast cancer depends on the generosity of partners like Price Chopper which are dedicated to giving back and improving health” states Myra Biblowit, president of the Foundation.  “Price Chopper is an example of corporate philanthropy at its very best.”

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  This is a fight that Price Chopper has waged for over 20 years.  We are a multi-site flagship sponsor for the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides” fundraisers in 3 New York state locations: Albany, Utica, Syracuse, as well as Burlington, VT; and Hartford, CT.  And once again the cause is personal – Associates, customers and friends and family are all at risk.  With Breast Cancer affecting 1 in 8 woman, most of us know at least one woman impacted by the disease.

It was that reality that inspired our company to team with The Breast Cancer Research Foundation to further support the search to find a cure.  3 years ago Price Chopper created their Breast Cancer Awareness – Join The Fight campaign. This is an annual in-store program that contributes 5 cents of the purchase of specially-marked Price Chopper brand products directly to BCRF’s innovative “Research in Action” program.  This program directly funds research grants such as the ones being led by Drs. Iglehart and Matulonis at leading medical centers worldwide. “We are so very proud of our commitment to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which in turn funds researchers who are investigating the root causes of cancer,” said our president and CEO, Neil Golub. “The spirit of our efforts is fueled by the fact that if root causes can be isolated, then cures can be developed,” he added.  The hope is that a cure will be found soon.  In the meantime, we will continue to fight for the cause and for the communities we serve.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and translational research.  In October 2009, nearly $29 million will be awarded to 171 scientists across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. BCRF perseveres in directing at least 85 cents of every dollar raised directly to research.  And for the eighth consecutive year, BCRF received Charity Navigator’s highest rating, four stars, thus outperforming over 99.8% of the 5,400 evaluated charities, while the American Institute of Philanthropy has awarded BCRF its highest possible rating of A+.  BCRF is the only breast cancer organization in the U.S. to receive these accolades.  For more information about BCRF, visit www.bcrfcure.org

nuVal logoShould you buy the wheat rolls or the potato bread? Which salty snack is more nutritious for your family? The NuVal System can help you make these decisions, quickly and easily.   The NuVal System summarizes the overall nutritional value of food into a single   number. The 1-100 scoring range enables you to see and compare the nutritional value of the foods you are buying.  NuVal considers more than 30 different nutrients and nutrition factors – and their impact on health outcomes – to determine a food’s score, so it gives a robust and fair account of a food’s true nutritional value. For every product on the shelf, you can see and compare (side by side on the same tag) exactly what you’re paying for how much nutrition. The higher the NuVal Score, the higher the nutrition. Because the NuVal System applies the same nutritional criteria to all foods, you can now quickly and easily compare the nutritional value of foods not only within a category (vegetables) but also across categories (vegetables and veggie burgers). We’re looking for your thoughts on NuVal…has it changed your shopping habits?  Have you involved your family in using the scores when they’re shopping with you?  Have you been suprised at the score of your favorite food?  Did you find an indulgence food with an awesome score? Let’s hear from you!

Everyone needs something different when they go in to their favorite supermarket.  We have all probably asked ourselves, “Why would they set this department up this way?” or thought “The products grouped in this aisle make no sense!”  Some people are looking for smaller supermarkets so it doesn’t take as long to shop, where others enjoy taking time to browse the aisles and explore new items on the shelves.   Supermarkets have had customers ask why the bottle returns are always in the front of the store, why the carts are kept outside, and why the lights are so dim or bright.  We finally have this great outlet to hear your thoughts!

So we are posing this question to consumers…If you could change one thing about the store design or layout of your Price Chopper, what would it be?

Today, Price Chopper announced the launch of ‘Fuel AdvantEdge’, an exclusive program never before offered in the Capital Region marketplace, in partnership with more than 70 local Sunoco stations that discount gasoline as a reward for grocery store purchases!

‘Fuel AdvantEdge’ is an ongoing, cumulative savings/reward program that gives consumers a 10¢/gallon discount on gasoline purchases for every $50 of groceries purchased (20¢/gallon on $100 purchased, 30¢/gallon on $150 purchased, etc.). Unlike other reward programs, consumers can accumulate their points/dollars spent across a 90-day timeframe and cash in on their gasoline discount for up to 20 gallons at their convenience, turning saved dimes into dollars. “What better way to reward our customers for choosing Price Chopper than by offering them great prices at the supermarket that translate to significant savings at the gas pump,” said Neil Golub, President and CEO of Price Chopper, who praised the company’s supply chain integration team for their Herculean efforts in committing and converting more than 70 gas stations throughout the Capital Region to the program. “And the number of participating stations continues to grow,” he added. “Sunoco is pleased to offer significant gasoline discounts through our partnership with Price Chopper. In other areas where Price Chopper has tested this program, we have customers saving fifty, sixty cents – even a dollar or more per gallon through the ‘Fuel AdvantEdge’ program. It is exciting that this kind of savings opportunity is available to our customers,” said Jeff Hassman, Channel Marketing Manager, Sunoco. This is an amazing savings program for our customers and we are SO excited to bring it to the Captial Region!  Visit your local Price Chopper for more information, pricechopper.com, or leave a comment/question here!

Today is June 1st – The Start of National Dairy Month!

spreadpic

The best way to get the calcium you need is by eating and drinking foods that naturally contain calcium. Milk and other dairy products are good sources of calcium; they naturally offer the most calcium per serving. Other sources of calcium include tofu, legumes, some green leafy vegetables and calcium-fortified orange juice. There are so many ways to explore the dairy category at Price Chopper; whether it be specialty cheeses, ice cream, yogurt, new recipes like cheesy spinach and artichoke fondue, blueberry soy smoothies, cheese stuffed chicken drumsticks…are you hungry yet? Not only are dairy products delicious, they are an important part of eating healthy.  Medical experts agree that optimal calcium intake during childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood can maximize genetically determined peak bone mass and slow bone loss that occurs with aging. Visit http://tiny.cc/gdVnM to view dairy-inspired recipes and read more about National Dairy Month!
