Written by Ben’s Sugar Shack, Temple NH It’s the 2016 Maple season! Even with the odd weather patterns that the Northeast has experienced this year, here at Ben’s Sugar Shack in Temple, NH we’ve seen a great return in the crop. Although this is hard work each year with long hours, little sleep and busy schedules, it’s all worth it when we hear from our customers how much they’re enjoying our maple syrup and products. Ben Logo 2 (2)We’re both proud and honored to be a part of Price Chopper’s homegrown network, producing and offering a wide range of our award-winning, 100% Pure New England maple products for you. Just as with Price Chopper, we aim to not only bring the finest products to our customers, but to truly be a part of every community that we are present in. Since the beginning, we have strived to bring our customers and retail partners, such as our friends at Price Chopper, a line of 100% pure maple products that truly stand out from the crowd. When did this commitment start?  Owner Ben Fisk’s passion for making maple syrup started when he was 5 years old, visiting a maple sugar house on a field trip in preschool. It was from that point on that he knew he was going to make syrup. After coming home from school, Ben immediately told his dad all about his experience and ideas. The very next day, he and his father got started and created their own homemade evaporator and hung only 13 sap buckets. Although that first year they only produced less than a gallon of syrup, within ten years, at age 15, Ben won the Maple Producers Carlisle Trophy for the Best Syrup in New Hampshire! Now, at age 27, Ben’s operation has grown to include two sugar houses, a wide variety of pure maple products, and a customer-focused staff. Whether you are looking for 100% Pure Maple Syrup, Maple Candy, Maple Cream, Maple Sugar, or even Maple Cotton Candy, we have that delicious something that you are searching for. If you’re in the area, come visit us for free tours and samples, every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm through April 12th! I would go to the store every year and buy a new pair of green flip flops just for this occasion. However, my flip flop wearing dreams were shattered throughout the years with unpredictable weather, most notably the ice storm two years ago in March. I had to use a mallet to get into my frozen car. Regardless of the weather, St. Patrick’s still brings many of us outside for the first time in months after a long winter (this past year’s mild winter may be the exception to the rule) for outdoor parades and activities. To get ready for St. Patrick’s Day, there are a few steps to take. First you have to find your green clothing, it’s rare to see anyone wearing anything, but the color green on March 17th.  The second is to plan how you will be celebrating the holiday. As I previously mentioned parades are a popular way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, but I usually prefer to host a St. Patrick’s day dinner party, either on or around the holiday (I’m not one to host in the middle of the week.) I love Irish food. I am always a fan of a hearty stew and basically anything made from potatoes. For St. Patrick’s Day dinner would not be complete without some interpretation of corn beef and cabbage. One of the simplest ways to make this St. Patrick’s Day classic is with iStock_000022107212_Mediumthe slow cooker. We have a few different recipes to choose from our Pinterest board as well as some nontraditional takes on the dish. The board also features a variety of side dishes and desserts that make for a very festive St. Patrick’s Day celebration. My personal favorites are the Traditional Irish Potato Pancakes, Irish Spiked Brownies, and Surprise inside St. Paddy’s Day cupcakes.   As with most holidays, decorating my house for the holiday is one of my favorite activities. For St. Patrick’s Day I tend to keep it simple. A decorating scheme using burlap, muted greens, white, and a touch of gold is perfect not only for St. Patrick’s Day, but many of the pieces could be reused for spring or Easter (as long as they are not covered in shamrocks and yes some of your decorations have to have shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day!)  And don’t forget the kids! Keeping the little ones entertained can be a challenge, but there are a ton of fun craft and activities themed around St. Patrick’s Day! Many of the crafts are great pieces of art that can be then used to decorate the home! Everyone have a safe and Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Written by Jane N.
